How to Navigate Without a Compass or With One

While a compass won't show you where you are, it will help you locate your way home if you lose track of your direction.

There are three methods you can use to navigate.

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using a compass)
  3. By stars

Landmarks can be objects you recognize as soon as you see them. These include trees, buildings and rivers. Landmarks provide visual clues to where you live.

Magnetic North is simply where the Earth's electromagnetic field points. If you look up at a skyline, you will notice that the sun seems to be moving across it. The earth's magnetic field actually causes sun to move around. The sun appears to move across the sky but it actually moves around the horizon. The sun is overhead at noon. The sun is directly below your eyes at midnight. The magnetic field of the earth is constantly changing. This means that the exact direction and orientation of the North pole magnetically changes each day. This means you might be off the course by quite a bit during a single day.

Stars can also be used to navigate. Stars appear over the horizon to rise and lower. These are fixed points that can be used to pinpoint your location relative other locations.
